AVA Challenge

Australia is going to the Moon!

AROSE was pleased to partner with Australian Virtual Astronaut (AVA) to present a brand-new challenge as part of their AVA Challenge in 2024.

‘Roving Around’ aimed to engage young people in a real-life space challenge and to inspire them to address the emerging challenges faced when working in Space and on Earth.  Roving Around gave students an insight into the work being done by the AROSE Trailblazer team in the design and development of ‘Roo-ver’, Australia’s first ever Lunar Rover, which will be part of NASA’s Artemis Mission. The challenge was designed as a flexibly run team event, for students in Years 5 – 10.

Your AVA 2024 Finalists!

We are thrilled to announce the finalists of the 2024 Australian Virtual Astronaut (AVA) Challenge!
As part of World Space Week, we would like to congratulate everyone who has been involved in the AVA Challenge and we’re very excited as we look forward to another 2025 AVA Challenge.

After completing an exciting 9-step STEM design sprint, student teams from across Australia this year have submitted their innovative solutions to tackle real-world challenges facing NASA’s Artemis program and the Australian space industry.

From Earth observation and lunar robotics to growing food and telecommunications in space, the creativity and passion showcased in the submissions was inspiring. Finalists have been selected for their outstanding video pitches and posters across six challenging scenarios, and these teams will present their ideas in on December 4 at 10:30am via Zoom or in person at the NSW Department of Education State Office in Parramatta

2024 AROSE Lunar Rover Challenge Finalists

  • Salesian College Sunbury (VIC)
  • St Phillips Christian College (NSW)
  • Mount Barker High School (SA)

After viewing all of the entries, Program Director & Resources Director Michelle Keegan from AROSE said,
“The quality of each presentation, the level of thought in each design and the enthusiasm in the way you’ve shared your work has left us incredibly excited by what lies ahead for every student”.

“One of our goals at AROSE is to inspire the next generation into STEM and space. So, while our rover team has been busy designing Australia’s lunar rover, we wanted to connect students from across Australia with the same challenge. Together with the AVA team, we hoped the roving around activity would do just that. The submissions we’ve received makes us so excited about where the students will be headed into the future. Every submission has uncovered not only a huge depth of talent, but a level of enthusiasm and passion that hit us straight away. A huge thank you to everyone for taking a part in the Roo-ver challenge.”
